Should I File The Private School Affidavit?

Should I file the private school affidavit? This is a question that I have been asking myself since the coronavirus pandemic began. Last week, the governor of California announced that students will not return to school this fall, however, schools will reopen and offer a 100% home-based education.  I have wondered what the school district and my children's school plans are, and if they will be able to meet my children with all their educational needs.

 

Some of you may be wondering, what is the private school affidavit? For those who are not familiar with the requirements of homeschooling and are contemplating the idea of homeschooling your children, there are a few things you should know before you make your decision. There are requirements that must be met in your state, and in your school district.

 

The private school affidavit is a registration document that is required to operate a private school and must be filed annually. In California filing must occur between October 1 and October 15. You may file your private school affidavit online or by mail.

 

If you decide to file the private school affidavit, this means your child will be exempt from attending public school if the public school district determines that your child meets the statutory requirements. If you file the private school affidavit and realize that homeschooling is not a good fit for you and your children you may register for public schooling again. Although it is not required it is recommended that you notify the California Department of Education if you no longer plan to continue homeschooling. Since the private school affidavit must be filed annually there is no need to file again if you do not wish to continue homeschooling your children. 

 

We are all navigating new territory this 2020-2021 school year. School districts in every city are working hard to accommodate our children's educational needs. However, it is important for parents to know that we have other options available if we wish to take the lead and homeschool our children.
